Francis Barton Gummere (1855-1919) was an American scholar, critic, translator, and professor whose work focused on early English literature, ballads, folklore, and the history of poetry. Educated at Harvard and later in Germany, Gummere became an important academic voice in the study of medieval and traditional literature at a time when English literary scholarship was becoming more professional and historically grounded in American universities.Gummere taught at Haverford College for many years and wrote extensively on Old English poetry, medieval literature, and the popular ballad. His scholarship helped introduce students and general readers to works that had previously been the province of specialists, and his translations aimed to preserve something of the movement, alliteration, and heroic force of early English verse while remaining readable for modern audiences.His translation of Beowulf became one of the better-known early twentieth-century English versions of the poem. While later translations have taken different approaches to diction, meter, and interpretation, Gummere's version remains valuable for readers interested in the history of Beowulf translation, Anglo-Saxon literature, and the effort to carry the sound and dignity of Old English heroic poetry into modern English.
