Violet M. Firth, later widely known by the pen name Dion Fortune, was a British writer, psychologist, occultist, and teacher whose work explored the relationship between psychology, spirituality, and human development. She studied psychology and psychoanalysis before becoming one of the twentieth century's most influential writers on Western esoteric thought.Firth wrote numerous works of fiction and nonfiction addressing consciousness, symbolism, spiritual experience, and the hidden forces shaping personality. The Machinery of the Mind, her first published book, presents her early attempt to explain modern psychological ideas in clear, accessible language.
A. G. Tansley was a distinguished British botanist, psychologist, and pioneering figure in the development of modern ecology. A Fellow of the Royal Society and later Sherardian Professor of Botany at Oxford, he also maintained a strong interest in psychology and psychoanalysis. His foreword lends contemporary authority to Firth's clear and balanced introduction to the workings of the human mind.
