Synopsis

Same as my dear friend and editor Perry G. Green, I grew up poor in rural areas of Alabama. The odd thing was we never considered ourselves poor. We always had plenty to eat and many activities to occupy our minds. One such joy was sitting and listening to our elders as they told wonderful tales of their youth. We would hang on every word as they told of their many experiences growing up and giving us life lessons we took to heart. Family was and still is my primary concern. Unknown to the faithful listener the torch of responsibility would be passed as one by one the voices of old received their Heavenly rewards. I do not consider myself to be a writer, nor does anyone else. I am however a story teller trying hard to continue the tradition set forth by my ancestors. Written words often fail to contain the true experience of past lives with the passion they were lived. Pictures only tell of a split second they represent and not the excitement surrounding the event. That is where the story teller completes the mystery, much as the photograph carried by Hammer Lane in this book. I began my career in long haul trucking in September, 1984. For over thirty-one years I have witnessed many changes in our great country, the people and also the trucking industry. More changes naturally will take place in the future. Shortly after starting my career I learned the TV shows and movies of the time cast a misconception of trucking. I decided then someone must tell the true life of the long haul driver accurately. That is why I chose this time period for the first book. Together with the reader we will grow into what trucking has become today. To my knowledge there has never been a book written nor movie or TV show filmed to portray the lonely and frustrating life of the long haul driver. Quite often cast in an unfavorable light and vilified by media I wish to bridge the gap between these dedicated men and women with their fellow citizens. Drivers sacrifice so much to keep this Nation prosperous. My own experience left me regretful for lost moments as my loving daughter grew from a child to the successful woman she is today. I can never get that back nor can I make amends to her for not being there for her when she needed my guidance and support.
