What at first appears to be an ordinary graphic novel quickly reveals itself to the reader as an extraordinary work of literary art that is also magnificently illustrated. The intersection of two languages express a single story: reaching for one’s dreams. Through a well-written, text that’s simple in style, Denise Turu tells her life story… In A Custom-Made Map, she also tries to unravel her frequent migrations and that feeling of not belonging anywhere: a widely-felt sentiment among young Latin Americans that emigrated for political, economic, or cultural reasons. It is the story of what every young person desires: control over their own life and the realization of their projects. It’s a custom-made map that becomes a riveting tale that’s full of hope, and that encourages the reader to reach for their dreams and to start over as many times as it takes. This is an exceptional, finely-illustrated book.

Denise Turu, was born in 1976 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As teenager she started to be involved in the world of comics and graphic novels. She published her first fanzine "Yo No Fui" in 1998. In her early twenties, she was selected to exhibit her paintings at an art gallery in Soho, New York. It was her first greatly successful art exhibition. One year later, in 2000, she moved to The Big Apple where her artistic career reached its maximum. She was living in New York City when the terrorist attack on the twin towers occurred and, due to this event, she started with the creation of 3D painting series about the New York subway system. This series was showed in major cultural centers and art galleries in Manhattan and Brooklyn, such as s.e.e.d gallery, Consulate General of Argentina, Local Project, among others. During her stay in New York, Turu met influential artists, film directors and producers interested in her art work; she worked in set design studios, painted murals and learned how to use new materials. She lived in the U.S. until 2006 and then moved to Spain where she participated in various artist residencies. She also felt the need of traveling and living in different European cities, such as Dublin, London, Paris and Barcelona, to find more artistic inspiration. Her artwork developed through a new direction. She began working on installations and sculptures based on recycled materials. In 2008, she moved to Palma de Mallorca and wrote her first graphic novel based on her life, "A Custom-made Map". Currently she lives in Barcelona and works as an illustrator and a visual artist.
