Synopsis

Inspiration of the Bible by B. H. Carroll — A Defense of the Inerrant Word

Rediscover a definitive, uncompromising classic on the verbal inspiration and complete inerrancy of Holy Scripture.

First published in 1930, Inspiration of the Bible brings together a foundational collection of eight monumental sermons delivered by Dr. Benajah Harvey (B.H.) Carroll, the legendary founder and first president of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Originally preached during an era when higher criticism began to challenge traditional orthodox beliefs, Carroll’s systematic defense stands as a timeless, thrilling reminder of a rich doctrinal heritage.

Piling Scripture upon Scripture with unyielding logic and a massive theological intellect, Dr. Carroll demonstrates with absolute clarity that historic faith requires a Bible that is completely without error—historically, scientifically, philosophically, and theologically. He masterfully tackles the challenging questions re-opened by modern critics, offering believers a clear, stable foundation for their faith in the verbal inspiration of the text.

Key Themes Addressed Within This Volume:
  • The Historic Belief: An overview of the inspiration of the Scriptures as it has been historically believed and defended.

  • Answering the Critics: A direct look at how the question of inspiration was re-opened by higher critics, alongside clear answers to their objections.

  • Difficulties Explained: In-depth, practical examples explaining complex textual arguments, including a deep dive into "Luke's Case" and other relative matters.

  • Defining Inspiration: Qualifying facts that enable us to accurately limit and state the true meaning and boundaries of inspiration.

  • Objections Answered: A direct, logical response to common difficulties, concluding with a thorough, practical resume of the entire discussion.

Why This Edition Is Essential:
  • Preserved Text: Contains the original text, delivering Carroll's powerful prose exactly as it was compiled.

Présentation de l'éditeur

My faith is the faith of a simple, plain Baptist. I accepted from my father and Dr. Carroll the verbal inspiration of the Bible, the deity of Jesus Christ, His perfect humanity, His atoning death, His bodily resurrection, His second coming. All my studies since have confirmed the simple faith I received from them. I greatly joy in the publication of this volume of Dr. Carroll’s sermons on the inspiration of the Bible. His interpretative authority has great weight with me, but I have never had occasion to depart from his teachings on these great themes. The logic, piling Scripture upon Scripture, coming from his great brain, made irresistible the force of his pronouncements. He was the greatest preacher and the mightiest soul I ever knew. He made deep tracks in Christ’s kingdom in Texas and the South-tracks that time cannot wear out. I trust that the messages he brings on this great theme will be quietly studied by multitudes of religious leaders, and I am sure the power of his messages will live long in their hearts and effectively in their lives. L. R. SCARBOROUGH.
