Synopsis

Tragedy is ingrained in the human story—abuse, dysfunction, and immorality only beget more of the same, and so the seeds of suffering are planted and the future is bleakly rooted in the past.

This is the first volume in a historical saga recounting the story of Brazil from 1500, when the Portuguese first set foot on its shores.

Tackling controversial issues regarding sex and religion, this candid novel delves deep into the broken lives of people whose painful pasts compel them to perpetuate their injuries. Follow this varied cast of explorers, Indians, monks, and slaves as they struggle to survive harsh realities in Portugal, Angola, and Brazil, whatever the cost.

No one is free from suffering, but as this book stirringly depicts—those who try to break the cycle shine a light that is not easily forgotten. A wealth of historical and human insights, Seeds of Suffering I will capture your attention, and your heart, from the first page.

À propos de l?auteur

Douglas Reid Copeland is a first-time novelist who was educated at Westminster College in Missouri and has lived in and visited over sixty countries.

Born in Brazil to American parents in 1947, he grew up in the Ipanema zone of Rio de Janeiro, a victim of child abuse. Suffering mental trauma, sexual abuse, psychological and frontal castration, toxic shame, neglect, and indifference during his formative and teenage years, Copeland developed chronic issues that marginalized him from society.

Only after being arrested in 1989 did he receive the help he needed to recover from his nightmarish life. After several years of probation and treatment via Dr. Fred Berlin’s recovery program at Johns Hopkins, as well as twenty years of psychiatric therapy, medications, and twelve-step programs, Copeland is finally experiencing the freedom of redemption.
