Elaine Dowell lives in North Yorkshire in the UK . Her son became ill with encephalitis aged 7 in 1991. Subsequently, in 1994, she founded the Encephalitis Society, a national charity providing support and information. In 2014 she was awarded an MBE in the UK Queen’s New Year Honours list for services to people with encephalitis and their families.
