There is a misunderstanding and confusion in the West that regards religion and Spirituality as the same thing. This has led to the removal of both the religious and Spiritual components of Yoga, mistakenly understood to be equal. When Paramahansa Yogananda first introduced Yoga to the West, it was presented in its Spiritual and scientific context, but this understanding of Yoga has drastically changed in the time since Yogananda’s passing in 1952. While the removal of Indian religious beliefs has been good for Yoga overall, the removal of the Spirituality of Yoga to appease those Westerners still clinging to a Judeo-Christian belief system has been detrimental to our understanding of Yoga.
