Synopsis

“Alberto and His Friends” is the book (actually, three books in one) that grows along with your child. Book 1, “A Day with Alberto,” is written for children 4 – 7 years of age. In gentle language, it introduces us to Alberto, a young boy whose family has recently arrived in the U.S. from Mexico. From Alberto to Grandfather, we meet three generations living in Los Angeles under one roof, working hard to make ends meet in their adopted country. “A Day with Alberto” is ideal for parents to read to younger children, or for slightly older children to enjoy on their own. In Book 2, “Sergeant Mike, the Policeman,” we follow Sergeant Mike, an Irish police officer, as he coaches his soccer team to the championship with the help of his star player, Alberto. The book is meant for children 8 – 11 years old and tells a positive story of understanding and respect through Sergeant Mike’s interactions with his team and, later, when he is invited to a celebration dinner at Alberto’s home. Book 3, “Barney and his Family,” tackles a difficult subject for young people 12 – 15 years old, as Alberto’s multiracial friend Barney deals with his Marine Sergeant father’s absence after shipping out for a dangerous tour of duty in the Middle East. In a matter-of-fact way, we learn about the void left by his departure and the many challenges he and his family will face in light of a serious war injury. Together, the books that make up this trilogy present positive messages about the contributions that Hispanic immigrants make to our country. You’ll be happy you got to know “Alberto and his Friends.”
