As I started putting together my poems for “A Little More Time” I wanted to make sure that I was being as authentic as I could without ending the book on a sad or hopeless note. I decided that the best way to do this was to start with only a few pieces from the years that I felt suicidal and gradually take pieces from my timeline leading up to 2013 when I first started to feel like myself again. One of the most important things that I figured out from writing the last 22 years is that I feel better when I leave off my journals with a positive message. Now, even on my worst days, even if I write 10 pages about how helpless, humiliated, and disgusted I may feel, I will make it a point to turn it around for the last few lines. When I end with pain, I felt pain. When I ended with hope, it left room for me to keep going. I felt a little more free. I felt a little more able to cope with my life and the world around me. There is a lot of truth to the saying “ We write our own story.” I think that “A Little More Time” is where I first started to realize this.

About the Author Joseph S. Fusaro credits music, writing, and photography with helping to relieve his psychosis and depression while living with bipolar 1 (manic depression) and General Anxiety Disorder. He found that he was able to ground his thoughts with art. He was able to slow down all of the confusion and racing thoughts. Then he would take photos of things that gave him hope, and write poetry to the photos in an attempt to replace the trauma of his attempted suicides and many hospitalizations. The last 4 years he has been busy putting the pieces back together, He always makes sure to add that he is "gratefully and patiently learning to live again." He is relentless in his efforts to change the public conversation surrounding mental health, making it an open, more educated, and less opinionated conversation. Joe has recently published 4 poetry books, a guide to recovery or management of symptoms, and a music journal of his experiences with psychosis from 2008-2010. He was a cast member in the 'This Is My Brave' New York City show in October of 2015 and has been very busy using his experience to help others realize there is hope for a positive and productive future after diagnoses. You can find Joe's poetry, blogs, music, and links to his social media at www.unreadletters.com He speaks at High Schools and Colleges with NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness).
