There he experienced from an early age the tough life of the local fisher folk, labouring at the docks, gutting and filleting herring and cod. But on week days he attended Aberdeen's Grammar School - as had Lord Byron in a previous era. Tom (as friends know him) always possessed passion and drive and yes, a certain way with the written word.
