We’d like to begin by asking you a question. How often do you sit down as a husband and wife to turn to the Word of God to settle your disagreements? As biblical counselors, we have posed this question to many couples who are struggling in their marriage relationship. The majority never go to the Bible, or allow the Bible to have the last word. The neglecting of the Word of God in marriage is responsible for the breakdown in relationship, which often causes Christian couples to divorce. Imagine what might change if couples chose to study the Word of God together, humbly allowing God and His Word to have the final say? That is our hope with this study, that you and your spouse will devote some time in your relationship to study the Proverbs and learn how to speak the language of love. What is the language of love? It is literally the words that we speak to one another, that include our thoughts and attitudes. Luke 6:45 is clear to teach us that “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Often we carelessly speak words, without giving a thought to the way they will impact our spouse. Unfortunately, we can never take those words back. Once they are spoken the damage is already done. Couples spend thousands of dollars for professional counseling to learn how to communicate with one another. That same money could be put to better use, if couples were willing to glean from the wisdom of the Proverbs, where they are provided with a wealth of instruction on the topic. Our desire in this study is to take you through seven lessons in Proverbs to help you on your journey. The questions are designed to challenge you, not only in the way you speak to one another, but to also challenge your thoughts and attitudes that serve to cause arguments and less than edifying conversations. Make no mistake, the way we communicate to one another in marriage is vital to the health of our relationships and to the glory of God. Isaiah 55:11 reminds us that God’s Word goes forth with power, it does not return void. It will accomplish exactly what God desires it to. If you and your spouse spend the time together to invest in this area of your marriage, God will do the rest!
