Two tales unfold together in this novel of historically inspired suspense. In the Northern Sahara a team of archaeologists go missing while on their search for the ancient city of Yullix, a necropolis of the doomed Felmyrian empire. What did they find under the sand? A young scholar and a disgraced archaeologist find their lives entwined by an ancient mystery that haunts the waking world. Michel Fontaine has returned home from his studies an Oxford for an interview with the retired Dr. Lacasse. What starts as curiosity soon becomes obsession and Michel finds himself drawn into the delusions of the old man. Michel quickly becomes trapped between wanting to know more, wanting to uncover the ancient mystery surrounding a lost civilization, and a wretched pursuit by some unknown darkness, some unseen dread. Are these delusions at all? Or have the men uncovered some terrible curse left by the Felmyrian empire in its dying days? Michel navigates his fear and self doubt as he traces the footsteps of another man's visions of death, decay, and terror. Did Lacasse really find something otherworldly in his travels to the deserts of North Africa? His expedition was so long ago, and all are dead save for himself. Or is the old man a murderer, a coward, simply a madman? Michel isn't sure, but he's certainly in too deep to back out now.
