Set in India in the fifties, this is the story of an arranged marriage. Surekha is married to Rome Chaudhry, a successful businessman in a British company. He is ambitious, with his sights set on becoming a Director when the British Directors leave India. He is spoilt by a doting mother and Surekha, who feels her life has been subordinated to her husband’s life and career, is dissatisfied and unhappy. They live in a small manufacturing town, where their lives revolve around the Club. Into this set up comes David, a nephew of the British Director. He has been through World War Two and has been brought to India to make something of himself. He is reluctantly persuaded to direct a play. She Stoops To Conquer is chosen and Surekha is the leading lady. She throws herself into the rehearsals and she and David fall in love. The small community watches this development with varying emotions but one of them, Avinash, filled with malice and jealousy, makes a wicked plan. Later, at a glittering reception at the Taj, Surekha meets the Machiavellian Avinash who tells her some tragic news. .
