A boy who has little in terms of money or friends comes into contact with a boy who seems to have everything but is wandering through his young life. Through the various obstacles that teenagers must navigate, ranging from gym uniforms to drug use, the boys come to rely on each other to get through. The baseball field that sits between Austin Kinzie's apartment building and the junior high school is the intersection where Austin and another boy, Thomas Washtenaw come into contact. Austin and his mother have just moved to the area and he is not making many friends. Thomas is from a wealthy family but has parents who are checked out. He hangs with the burnouts but is friendly to Austin. Austin feels that he must distance himself from Thomas but another encounter at the baseball field pulls him back in.
