Synopsis
King Alfred has a problem: his half-brother Prince Rolande is becoming entirely too popular with the nobility and the people. Angela, Alfred's mistress also has a problem: under the terms of her late bachelor uncle's will, neither of his nieces inherits her share of his huge fortune until both are married or reach the age of twenty-one. Unfortunately for her, cousin Ludivine, her ward, is only eleven years old. The King's solution to both problems is obvious: use his Royal authority and Angela's authority as legal guardian to force Rolande to marry an eleven-year old girl. However it doesn't quite work out the way Alfred intended. Rolande and Ludivine meet a few days before the wedding and almost instantly become friends. By the wedding day the two of them have come up with a solution of their own.The ceremony is over quickly, the signing of necessary documents takes perhaps forty minutes more, and after an hour at the lavish reception, bride and groom leave the reception hall. From that moment they are always in the site of witnesses who will attest to the fact that the newlyweds were never alone together, and in fact went separate ways, she in a carriage heading south to return to her home in the Isles, and he on horseback heading north to resume his task of ridding that area of bandits. The King's order has been obeyed, true, and his mistress has her inheritance. On the other hand, Rolande's reputation is actually enhanced, and Ludivine is now free from her faithless guardian, and a Princess besides. Husband and wife in name only, they expect never to meet again. In five years they can legally declare their marriage annulled on the grounds of childlessness. Being friends, however, they begin a correspondence whose nature gradually changes as the years pass.
