This is an autobiographical account of a Liverpool schoolboy's experiences when attending a Catholic selective central school during World War II. This secondary school for boys was founded and run by the prestigious teaching order, the De La Salle Brothers, as a type of school analogous to and yet distinct from the Grammar School, and providing an education designed to prepare boys for entry into the various branches of industry, commerce and agriculture at the age of 15. It was a technical and commercial vocational school which the Brothers also hoped would foster vocations to the priesthood.
