Synopsis

This delightful book introduces parents, teachers, and most importantly, children to the elements of creativity as described by E. Paul Torrance (Creative Vision, 2013) based on J. P. Guilford’s (1956) four divergent thinking factors. The author, a teacher of children and teachers for 40 plus years, often began her classes by teaching students about J. P. Guilford’s four divergent thinking factors as defined in E. Paul Torrance’s Tests of Creative Thinking including (a) fluency—the number of relevant responses, (b) flexibility—the number of different categories or shifts in responses, (c) originality—the number of unusual yet relevant ideas … , and (d) elaboration—the number of details used to extend a response” (Hebert, Cramond, Speirs, Millar, & Silvian, 2002, p. 31). Once children understand the elements of creativity, they become much more creative in their thinking, their projects, and their writing. They generate more ideas, use more categories of ideas, are more original, and add more details to their writing and projects! This book introduces these elements of creativity to children and allows them to vicariously score for the elements in some simple illustrations. The book can be used with children of all ages. Extra scoring pages are included for creative contests that the reader designs. Have fun as you share these powerful elements and help your children and students be more creative, thus enjoying life and work more!
