Mary Cares The thesis for this books is that Mary cares for the children of God with a love so powerful that it stays with them from birth to death; in other words, Mary’s love for each of God’s children os life-long and continuous. The thesis is not my own, but is taken from the teachings of the Second Vatican Council document Lumen Gentium. (LG, 61-62) First of all, what does Mary’s care mean to us who are on their pilgrimage to heaven? For one thing Mary’s care means having a relationship with God’s Mother as if we were her actual children and not just adopted children. In the order of grace we are God’s children by adoption. Unlike the Word made flesh who is the actual Son of God, yet who assumed a human nature, we are inserted into the Mystery of the life of God by the power and Wisdom of God. Mary is God’s Mother in the flesh The adopted children of God are Mary’s children by adoption God cares for his adopted children thru Mary, the Mother of God. Mary is truly the Mother of God. The Word of God has no origin: “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” (Jn. 1:1) An analogy can make this helpful. The same Mother’s love that cares for the natural children of a family is also the love that cares for the adopted children of the family. This is the case with Mary. God’s infinite wisdom predestined Mary’s love to have a care for his adopted children with the same love Mary would given his natural son, Jesus Christ. We know God’s love is infinite and that he knows all things. Who are the adopted children of God? St. Paul’s letter to the Romans outlines the characteristics of the adopted children of God. He says that those who are “led by the Spirit of God” can be considered the children of God. The children of God must have a Mother. Just as the children of God are those who are led by the spirit of God, so God has placed the Immaculate Virgin Mary, who was conceived without original or actual sin, to be the Mother of his children. One Mother for all God’s children, One Spirit by whom they are led. The second characteristic of the children of God is that they are free form servile fear to call God “Father.” St. Paul shows us that the Spirit that leads the children of God does not lead them to fear but to freedom. “His Spirit bears witness with our Spirit that we are the children of God.” (Rom. 8:16) If God bears witness with our Spirit that we are the children of God, he also bears witness within us that we have the Mother of God who cares for us. We are God’s children because of a free gift of grace as Mary is the Mother of all his children by a similar yet more exalted gift. We rejoice that God united us together with his Son, so that we can be the children of so exalted a Mother and the adopted brothers and sisters of so great a redeemer, Jesus Christ. Our relationship with God’s only-begotten Son, the Word made flesh, and his Immaculate Virgin Mother was conceived before the world began. We were conceived to be holy and spotless in his sight all the days of our life.” There can be no greater purity than that which is in the Word made flesh and his Immaculate Mother, both led by the Spirit of God. God expects nothing less than holiness from his children. “Like obedient children, do not act in compliance with the desires of your former ignorance but, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in every aspect of your conduct, for it is written, “Be holy because I [am] holy.” (1 Peter 1:14-16) For those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption, through which we cry, “Abba, Father!” The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. (Rom. 8:14-17)
