The era in which Prophet Habakkuk lived were without a doubt perilous times. Not only was Judah facing enemies from neighboring superpowers of the time but there were enemies from within with evil and the wicked holding sway all around. Thus, for Habakkuk and the people of Judah it was a time of fear, oppression, persecution, lawlessness and immorality. It is in this climate God called Habakkuk to be His messenger and true to his prophetic calling, Habakkuk cried out against the moral corruption of idolatrous Judah that prevailed in his day. He foretold about the imminent judgement upon Judah. Before this cry we see the prophet in a frank exchange with God regarding his concerns and God’s responses to both his first question and ensuing follow-up questions and the aftermath and impact of this exchange with God is really the theme of this exciting Old Testament book. Habakkuk after having all his questions answered affirmed that during those horrifying experiences resulting from God’s judgement upon Judah, the righteous ones would nonetheless live by faith in God and that the life of faith would be the watch word of the faithful and the humble. The moral climate of the time of Habakkuk’s life and ministry was not very much unlike ours today. We face similar times today. Times of great wickedness and idolatry where everything goes. In these times we need to learn to converse and communicate with God, hear His word and respond in faith like Habakkuk did. And like him, we should not only boldly take all our questions to our God but also accept by faith every situation we may face in life no matter how vexing and unjust it might be, trusting that God’s righteous justice will ultimately triumph over these situations in His time. Whatever adversities we may face we can be sure He will not only answer our prayers and questions but also deal with these situation as He did in days of old as He changes not! This 21 days devotional is designed to be both an exposition on the Book of Habakkuk and a daily devotional you can use for your quiet time with God. Thus, you can choose to read it through as an exposition a chapter or two at a time or use it as series of daily devotionals read and meditated on one reading at a time. Whichever way you choose to read this book you can be sure that God will speak to you and bless you.
