The Price of Freedom is a black comedy about the psychological and moral costs of doing what you really want, about the constraints convention, career, friends and family impose on the individual and about how the past catches up with us and taunts us. The story – which spans a quarter of a century - begins in 1975 with Dusty who, at 18, has dropped out of university to go and live with her boyfriend Charlie in London, only to discover new constraints working for the DHSS. Still seeking Freedom, the two set off for Dorset, planning to sell beads and live like hippies. Only already they are weighed down with their home-made tent (their bedsit curtains sewn together), a cat and her six new-born kittens. The dream of freedom after leaving dull clerical jobs in London quickly turns sour as Dusty realises they have no money to live off and she becomes less than enamoured with Charlie. Twenty five years on the Millennium has dawned. Dusty – who has changed her name to Tillie – is much older and wiser and has a career in Social Work. Happiness, however, is an elusive thing and Tillie wonders if the road she has taken has been the right one as she gradually realises she cannot escape the mistakes of the past.
