Synopsis

‘Flogging it: The Accounts of a Reluctant Shopkeeper’ is a true account – a diary, if you will, of my first year in online shopkeeping. The shopkeeping itself, meant to last for a year, ended up stretching to seven. A proper apprenticeship during which time I travelled most of the length and breadth of Scotland (I drew the line at England) going round the auction houses. That, I see in retrospect, was the glamorous bit. The less glamorous side involved bookkeeping, packaging, listing adverts, writing to customers and, last but not least, dealing with ebay. Apart from the fine art there was porcelain (Minton, Wedgwood and many others) as well as textiles (mostly curtains), Scottish glass and a brief foray into other antiques. I started out a reluctant shopkeeper but there was some reluctance in bringing it all to an end too, despite the fact I knew I wasn’t making money. Like other things I have done in my life, including forays into Leftwing politics, it has been an adventure. By 2015 I decided, after several false endings, it was time to move on and wind the whole thing up and get back to what I like to think I do best – writing.
