Young Bridget is a neglected misfit. While struggling with social ineptitude, she is brutally attacked at school and even less able to function in society. She leaves the hospital against medical advice, using her wits and sheer force of will to make a life for herself. She spends the next five years growing up and battling to learn how to have normal human relationships, without sacrificing her freedom. She experiences love for the first time, and learns that she doesn’t have to keep everyone at a distance. Love comes at a price, but starved for affection, she travels that rocky, uphill path with twists and turns and potholes that she never imagined possible. She never quite loses herself, but she becomes a whole new person.
