This is a compilation of folk tales from Zimbabwe told to Rudo by his grandmother long before he went to school. It was a way of traditional education since long back formal education did not exist in most African communities. Story-telling was an integral part in the African culture. It was a way of both entertaining and informing the children. Folklore comprised tales, riddles, lullabies as well as songs and different traditional registers. The stories served different purposes in the lives of the children for instance, accepting advice, refraining from using vulgar language, learning to accept each other regardless of differences in age, stature as well as gender and so many other aspects of life. Most of the creatures in these stories were personified. This largely served to teach the children the characteristics of living things as well as non-living ones. The stories were mostly told at night before sleeping. Usually, this was the time when everybody had finished their chores. These were mostly told by grandparents since they were the most experienced members of the society. Later on, the children could also tell stories of their own but more often than not, they imitated the format used by their elders.Despite the visual impairment, Rudo has told these stories in a very fascinating manner.Indeed, at first sight, these stories sound very shallow and childish but, I do urge the reader to give much thought to them and, they eventually will discover that “the proof of pudding is in the eating.” The stories of course do apply and appeal to all age groups.
