Synopsis

[Product Description]Acid Acres is a work of literary fiction set in rural Connecticut between 1968 and 1970. In a narrow sense, it is the story of individuals and their personal relationships, but in a wider sense, it is also the story of a new generation—the so-called Counterculture. In startling prose and stunning realism, Acid Acres accurately recreates the spirit of a brief time in American history when young hearts could go their way, to paraphrase a popular tune of the time.Steven Crane, the protagonist of the plot, is a young man from another world. Returning home from a foreign war, it has been four years since he last saw his family and the pastoral countryside of New England. He soon discovers that the society he once knew is gone. Everything has changed.About the only thing that has not changed is Steven’s mother, Millicent Crane. She is still a widow and is still completely oblivious. Her main purpose in life, after cooking, is to make sure her two children stay on the straight and narrow path. Steven’s younger sister, Jennifer, is just starting her third year at Radcliffe and has already fallen off the straight and narrow path. When Steven asks her if she is still a virgin, she laughs at him. When he tells her that a decent young woman should wear a bra, she drops the F-bomb on him. He writes her off as merely a “little slut” attending a fancy college.Steven Crane is stuck in time. He is a walking, talking anachronism. Steven simply does not understand what happened to his generation while he was away. Worse, he does not care. He is happy with his secluded life, working on his mother’s poultry farm and spending his free time sketching the idyllic landscapes that surround him. The only problem is, in spite of his good looks, he cannot find any female companionship. However, all that is about to change for Steven Crane, radically so. The change begins at midnight on a lonely country highway when Steven encounters a “golden angel” bearing a strange and powerful gift.Acid Acres follows the trajectory of Steven Crane’s transformation from a “redneck jerk,” as a college feminist called him, before she fell in love with him, into a recognized artist and ardent exponent of the Counterculture. Along the way, in a sprawling cast of strange and memorable characters, the reader meets the many people who influence Steven’s social, emotional, intellectual, and artistic development. There are the women: Steven’s sister, Jenny, running from her working-class background and hurtling toward an adult life of middleclass materialism that she does not want; Winifred Vanderjagt, the student actress whose extraordinary beauty mesmerizes men and whose reckless sexuality destroys them; the true heart and little firecracker, Patricia Wilson, whom men use but none can master; Linda Kozlowski, the single mother and center of gravity for a farmhouse full of cats, chickens, cows, and out of control hippies; and Helen Bentley, the sophisticated older woman hell bent on punishing her husband for his infidelity. And there are the men: Guy Robinson, a guilt-ridden hero of WW I and disillusioned revolutionary from a time long gone; the brilliant but shallow English literature student, Peter Gromly, who drools over young women, never getting a taste, and is destined to become a public school teacher where he will pollute poor little minds forever; Professor Robert Cooper, the bad boy of the university art department who would like to throw his wife off a bridge and restart his career; and Jack Bentley, Helen’s husband, the grand maestro of leading-edge psychology and kinky lifestyles, soon to be devastated by his own theories.Acid Acres is not a book filled with happy people living in happy times, although it has its many moments of joy, frivolity, tenderness, and love. Moreover, it is certainly not a book for anyone offended by explicit language, promiscuity, and casual drug use.
