King County, Kentucky native Karl Ferguson, Jr., doesn’t find it easy to fit in where he lives, as he's constantly in trouble with the law or his parents. Given the choice between joining the military and going to jail, Karl Jr. joins the Air Force to pursue his dream of wealth while traveling the world. Fate awaits Karl Jr., as the innocent, naïve Elaine Brown, ten years his junior, has fallen in love with him and is waiting for him to return home.
After returning home from a dishonorable discharge, Karl Jr. now sees Elaine as a beautiful woman, and not the poor little girl from the head of a hollow. He chooses to woo her, and they get married, but their marriage begins to unravel over time. Unable to have children, the couple adopts two children, Richard and Kentucky Shine, who get to experience life in this small county of colorful characters.
As time passes, the Ferguson’s tumultuous marriage steam rolls into overwhelming emotional strain due to Karl Jr.’s infidelities and gambling, leading to a divorce. This takes a remarkable toll on Elaine’s well-being, changing her happiness to gloom. Soon after the divorce, Karl Jr. begins a new family with the young teenage girl who helped end his marriage. Even though she is hurting from Karl Jr.’s choices, Elaine still secretly pines for and continues to love Karl Jr. in hopes that he will return to her one day. As Karl Jr.’s relationship with his adopted children grows more distant, Elaine becomes more unstable, and Richard and Kentucky Shine experience neglect and abuse, leading them down a path in their future relationships.
Decades pass after the divorce, and Karl Jr. now faces his own death, looking for forgiveness—something he may never receive from his children. Eventually, Kentucky Shine and Richard must also decide whether to forgive their mother, who put their father and her self-loathing above them at a time in their lives when they needed her the most. Life lessons, emotional pain, and the discovery of how to move forward are all that await any of us In The End.
