Samuel Garvin and George Mooney were both revered individual’s, and much characterised by Sheffield folklore during the earlier years of the twentieth century. Both men were leaders of opposing fractions of the 'Mooney' and 'Park Brigade' gangs, as their conflict would escalate into the brutal episode of the ‘Sheffield Gang Wars,’ during the aftermath of World War One. Their prize being for control of the lucrative ‘Sky Edge’ gambling ring, situated at a secluded site high above the city of Sheffield. Providing an ideal vantage point, to which many willing ‘punters’ were able to participate, in all forms of illegal gambling activity. The gambling ring of ‘Sky Edge’ had its origin during the later years of the nineteenth century, where working men from the city would often congregate after their work shift to supplement their meagre income. Gambling activity at 'Sky Edge' increased significantly after 1914, due to the emergence of readily available money within the city, as a direct attribute to the upturn of Sheffield’s economy, during the ‘boom years’ of manufacture for the First World War effort.The book ‘Up at the Sky Edge - 1917’ highlights the fortunes of two men, heavily involved in the early years of the gang struggle, Smauel Garvin and William Francis. Both were determined to escape from the 'horror and carnage' of the ‘Western Front,’ and of their return to Sheffield. Both men were instrumental in the formation of the notorious 'Park Brigade' and thier undertaking of gaining back control of the lucrative ‘Sky Edge’ operation, from thier former associate George Mooney.Sheffield was a hard working Industrial city of the time, and a very violent place.
