Synopsis

The Emerald Pyramid combines the elements of a fantasy and a detective crime drama. The story begins when a magical artifact of a lost civilization is recovered. The Electra Stone is a powerful relic of the Shallindran magicians who crossed an inter-dimensional gateway to our world to establish a colony. When that colony is destroyed the gateway is closed for thousands of years. The Electra Stone, a flawless emerald shaped in a perfect pyramid is believed to have been destroyed along with the colony but this is nowt the case. It remains hidden on the ocean floor for millennia until discovered by treasure hunters searching for a Spanish shipwreck.. Murullian, a Shallindran magician, learns of the stone's recovery and comes to New York to find it. While he is establishing himself and searching for the pyramid he commits multiple homicides during a bank robbery. Scott Hoffman a Lieutenant of the 16th Precinct in Manhattan is assigned the case. During an unsuccessful attempt to retrieve the stone from the Metropolitan Museum Hoffman's mentor and best friend, a former detective named Ed Allen, is killed. Murullian is severely wounded but escapes. Hoffman and his partner, Joe Sullivan stake out the museum, hoping to catch Murullian when he returns. Instead they find a young wizard who is pursuing Murullian. He is Nikolaiev Ironwood and has come to bring Murullian back to Shallindra to face justice. Hoffman makes a secret alliance with the magician. When Sullivan is murdered Hoffman and Nikolaiev make a plan to use both magic and Hoffman's detective skills to set a trap for the wizard. Together they try to apprehend Murullian during.another attempt to recover the pyramid. Hoffman is nearly killed and Murullian escapes without the artifact. Knowing Murullian will make another attempt Hoffman calls upon Ed Allen's daughter Patti for assistance. Patti is an officer of the Boston PD and a former marine. They realize that Murullian will make his next attempt when the pyramid is being moved to the Boston Science Museum and they make a plan to stop him. What they do not realize is that Murullian has assembled an army of enthralled humans and equipped them with modern weapons. Hoffman is injured and Murullian is successful in recovering the stone. The wizard escapes back to Shallindra with the stone. The trio follows Murullian through the Portal of Andrusian to Shallindra. They have equipped themselves with sophisticated modern weaponry which they believe may negate Murullian's advantage. In Shallindra Patti and Scott discover a culture they could never have imagined. Although the Shallindrans are adept at magic their society is primitive, mired in thousands of years years of repression and stagnation. Descendants of human slaves brought through the portal Millennia earlier have been kept in captivity by their wizard overlords. These humans have developed a culture of their own. Although Shallindrans possess magical abilities they have little mechanical or artistic ability and are more reliant on their human slaves than they realize. Nikolaiev introduces Scott and Patti to human rebels called the Disenchanted, who resist the magicians' domination. They agree to fight together using the weapons the humans have brought with them from our modern world. Nikolaiev is reunited with his mother, Marisha, and sister, Sarafina, both humans slaves who have taken shelter with the resistance in their headquarters, a system of subterranean tunnels and abandoned mine shafts they call the Honeycomb. Scott and Patti learn that while Nikolaiev is a skilled magician he is only half Shallindran. He is a mule wizard, the offspring of the union of his human mother and a Shallindran magician. He has spent his whole life trying to cast off his legacy of magical ability, despising the magicians who have his mistreated his family and his people.Together with the Disenchanted, they confront Murullian at Fireheart Mountain and the final battle begins.
