“The Great Machine” belongs to the contemporary Brazilian dramaturgy. It is a play presenting political and social protest, disguised under a metaphoric language because it was written during the period of the Brazilian military dictatorship. The plot of “The Great Machine” unfolds in a village isolated from the rest of the universe: a caricatured microcosm, where one day arrive four boxes containing pieces for the assembly of a strange machine. The villagers do not know how to build it, nor do they know its utility, but they start trying to put it into operation. The action of the drama develops around this situation, presenting a social and existential critique, and proposing at the end an unexpected solution.
