Synopsis

The spam e-mail almost got deleted. It began: "Greetings dear recipient My name is Barr. Abadom Butlezi Jr and I am an attorney of the law Nigeria I also do inernational diplomancy and I used to be a rich man. I used to be very rich and happy posperous and joy with my four (4) child and wives, then Your country attacked us and it all changes. I am not from Nigeria I do not know anything on this country and I dont know this man. I am from my country and it is in trouble from your country, but my dear late friend knew you and knew You were differnt and you dont suppor torpedo our country. he told me all abot You and You are a wonderufl person who will surely understans our hardships. im not from nigeria i don't know nigeria im from somewhere else but i withheld that for personal reasons. I know You will be willing to help though." The e-mail then offered "a sum of 10,20,000 (ten thousand twenty hundred US dollars’) for honest confidentialitise to enable us sees this deal through thich and thin becaue we are war mates. PLease don't forget the bank accoun # though, that's importnat so we can gvie you teh $$$" Thus begins a hilarious correspondence between my 13-year-old daughter and a would-be Nigerian scammer. Poor Abadom wins our sympathy, he tries so hard to fulfill his chosen profession. But having gained an appreciative audience, Abadom soon forgets scamming and starts to get really imaginative! ourselves in a world where words and grammar run wild, where troops of murderous pandas roam and refrigerators obstinately refuse to hand out cash on demand. The boundary between genius and lunacy has been described as very narrow. This book treads that fragile boundary curiously and amusingly. The first few pages are, I admit, somewhat difficult. Abadom has a highly individual approach to spelling and grammar which may suggest that his words have arrived to us by way of a kitchen blender. But it shouldn't be long before you realize that he is saying something, though certainly not in the usual way. And his enthusiasm is infectious. The other point that may turn you off at the start is the idea that since he is a Nigerian spammer, he must be after your money. Do not fear; your pocketbook is safe. Not only is Abadom the least competent scammer you'll ever find, what he really wants to do is find someone to listen to him. I will leave it to you to discover the convoluted, hilarious, and grotesque world he inhabits. Wit and friendship are found in unlikely places.
