Synopsis

In June 1914, Ocean Beach’s Wonderland Amusement Park could do no wrong. It was the site of the Blue Streak, the biggest roller coaster on the West Coast and money was rolling in. Every day thousands of people flocked to the San Diego attraction and were entertained in its casino, dance pavilion, Japanese Tea Garden, swimming plunge and roller skating rink. Wonderland’s zoo housed hundreds of animals and birds and its midway with a carousel was lined with 40 games of chance. SanDiegoLand: When Wonderland took on the World is the latest historical novel from John Culea and follows the adventure at Wonderland for Pete and Grace Adamson, first presented in Culea’s last novel, Miner Leaguer. Pete and Grace have come from Bisbee, Arizona, Pete to be an assistant manager at Wonderland and Grace to work as a reporter for the San Diego Union. Across town in San Diego’s Balboa Park, a threat to Wonderland’s survival was in its final stages of construction. The Panama-California Exposition, a world’s fair event backed by well-known leaders including industrialist-developer John D. Spreckels was due to open January 1, 1915. SanDiegoLand carries the reader into the fray between the two rival attractions as Wonderland tries to survive seemingly impossible odds against its mighty competitor. The book poses questions about puzzling decisions made by the owners of Wonderland including having the flamboyant David Collier on its board of trustees while he was president of the Exposition. The story shows the difficulty Grace faces to stay true to her journalistic calling while at the same time having to report a likely impending disaster for her husband’s employer. And it reveals a critical decision Pete must make that tests his faith and character. Featured in the book is charismatic and fiery Ying Lu. She and her family knew Pete and Grace in Bisbee and have come to San Diego to work in her father’s Chinatown restaurant. While China is prominently featured at the Exposition, the reader will learn how San Diego’s Chinese were mistreated and what Ying Lu did to overcome segregation and discrimination and how Grace’s newspaper reports focused attention on the problem. SanDiegoLand: When Wonderland took on the World offers historical insight on how the Exposition’s success and what happened to Wonderland shaped the city of today.
