This is the story of a boy of 14 who joined the Merchant Navy in 1924. Life at sea was hard then, but became even worse as the interwar depression deepened. Regrettably, George doesn’t appear to have written anything of his time between 1931 and 1940, but the story resumes to describe his harrowing experiences after the sinking of the Carlton by an Italian submarine.
