Synopsis

When industrialization started in the west in the early 19th century man was given a raw deal. Economists described labour as a commodity, which could be bought and sold in the market like any other factor of production but the growth of trade unionism and democracy forced the government in Europe and other parts of world to enact labour laws for protecting worker from exploitation and providing social measures for them. The managers too in the early stage of industrialization did not consider man as an important element of enterprise. Labour was available at a cheap rate for long term in hazardous working condition risking their health and life and were made to sleep on the floors of godowns. They could be fired from the job at will. But this stage of effect could not last long. Unions forced the managers to cone to the bargaining table. The loses due to strike and other forms of labour unrest were not so small that it could be ignored. The new theories of group behaviours, leadership, communication, and motivation developed by them and the management practitioners have been a great help to the manager in understanding the workforce and coordinating their efforts. The technique of manpower planning and selection, training and development, job evaluation and merit rating, and financial and non financial motivation based upon the new concept is increasingly being used for better utilization of human potential at work.
