Synopsis

My dad was the poet laureate of the family. His poems were a mainstay at family gatherings and appreciated by all. Some were humorous and made me laugh. Other more serious lines touched my heart and were imprinted to my soul. As a child I followed in my father's footsteps by starting memorable lines with ‘Roses are red, Violets are blue’. As I matured, I began writing verses I planned to sell to Burma Shave for their roadside placards. I had yet to be introduced to serious poetry and must say it wasn’t a priority in either my educational curriculum or my life as a fun-loving, carefree child. My first exposure to formal poetry came from Mr. Peele, my high school senior English teacher, and his oral recitation of Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken. Mr. Peele was special and made poetry come alive. I’m not sure what he saw in my writings but he obviously saw something I had never seen. He encouraged me to keep writing and to write from my heart. While it took me nearly fifty years to follow his advice, this book is written from my heart.
