Synopsis
They thought they lived in the best small town in America. Only Shelly Hinson knows that the "best small town" award is a lie--because she is the one who wrote the article for a national magazine. Braxton, California--her hometown--is no better or worse than other towns in America. Little did Shelly know the effect the hoax would have on people, both long-time residents and newcomers drawn by reports that are seen on national television. Some, like Benny Green and his wife, find relocation their best move and everything they are looking for in Braxton. Moving from Virginia benefits them and the town. The slower-paced life suits Benny as he reaches out to those around him through his popular new restaurant--and in the process brings new respect and dignity to a formerly disbarred attorney. Others, looking for a best move, find just the opposite, including a former baseball Hall of Fame player and his family. Among the town officials, only Cal Spencer seems to keep his head, remaining a confirmed skeptic about all the hoopla. He wonders how could this article appear without anyone in town having spoken to the writer? Shelly watches as a parade of characters arrive in Braxton, including a wise-cracking, transient motorcycle rider whose Harley will become a surprising bond between them. As her lie unfolds, Shelly sees with growing guilt the changes taking place and then in one horror-filled morning, tragedy strikes during a celebration of the town's new-found fame. Shelly is forced to come to grips with her life, including her spiritual condition, as she realizes how her article has changed the lives of so many people, including her own.Hoping to bring integrity back into her life, Shelly clashes with the publisher of the magazine that printed the false story. She is given the option of having the story printed the way the publisher wants, which would mean coming to New York for a new job and a big salary, or losing everything. What will be Shelly's best move?
