John R. Tanner served with Base Hospital 34 in Nantes, France, during World War I. These letters to home covered the state-side mobilization of the hospital staff, the trip across the Atlantic on the Lusitania, the construction and operation of the hospital, and the immediate postwar period during which Tanner successfully applied to the architecture program at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Included are many observations on the military, politics, French architecture (which particularly interested him during his time off), French culture, prices, and many other things.
