Synopsis

The story of James Kirkpatrick is Part One of a story that probes the generational conflict that occurs when a young American GI goes MIA during the Korean Conflict. After a young Texas teenager is molested by his high school football coach, the possibilities he envisioned for a successful future vanish overnight. Sexual confusion, impending fatherhood and a friendship tested by lies—these trials occupy James’ mind as he enlists in the Korean Conflict in 1951. Is he a victim or a survivor? James grapples with his dilemma during an era when molestation and sexual identity were taboo topics. What we do not communicate becomes secret, stigma and shame. In Part Two, Jimmy Donovan must come to terms with the ghost of a father who has haunted his entire life with his absence. In 2005, Jimmy is dealing with his own mid-life confusion. Who was his father really? Was he the hero he was always led to believe he was? "Every Living Thing" is a two-part fictional memoir about fathers and sons that explores the moral dualism inherent in our natures. The narrative in this two-part inaugural novel leaves the reader hungry for new information even when they suspect what has happened. The teenaged James Kirkpatrick displays the typical self-absorption of a young man growing up post-World War II in a small Texas border town. He becomes lost in many identifiable ways following his sexual molestation by a trusted coach. In whom can he confide in a time before issues like molestation and sexual identity were discussed openly? Self-loathing consumes him as he becomes convinced that his life no longer has any direction, purpose or value. For three years in the early 1950's, troops from the United States fought a very costly war in Korea, sometimes referred to as "The Forgotten War." The sacrifice of one of their own is far from forgotten by James Kirkpatrick’s family who wait for decades for news about how his last days were spent. His remains have never been located; how will they ever know what happened to him in Korea? In the novel’s second part, James’ son, Jimmy Donovan is dealing with aging parents, marital infidelities and estrangement from his youngest daughter. While advice or assistance from others is helpful, he wonders what his biological father would advise. He has always placed great stock in the stories about his father’s heroic status. As Jimmy confronts the consequences of his own decisions, he is left to ponder a Universal query: What are we left with when we are forced to surrender our most cherished myths?
