Synopsis

BERT In 1910 Thomas, a merchant seaman from England jumped ship at Auckland Port to make a new life for himself in New Zealand. He was soon employed as a sawyer in a mill where he quickly gained the respect of his employer and the men he worked with due to his skilfulness and work ethic. He met Beatrice not long after his arrival, a beautiful girl who he was instantly attracted to. They married and had two children, Kathleen and Patricia. Between the births Thomas served in France in the first world war where he was injured but recovered. Not long after returning home from the war Beatrice was diagnosed with cancer and died. Devastated, Thomas had to find a way to bring up his two precious girls on his own which he did in the only manner he knew how. He married a second time because he wanted his daughters to have a mother. Her name was Doris and she did the very best she could all things considered. Doris fell pregnant not long after they were married and baby Bert was born on 15 September 1929. Kathleen the eldest became a nun, Patricia was plagued with mental illness which presented in various ways causing much sadness in the family. Patricia's life ended tragically. Bert gave his life to Christian ministry and was the rock who kept his family members sane through many trying times that could otherwise have destroyed their family unit. Doris died very suddenly in August 1957 which broke Thomas's heart. Only eight months later Thomas died in April 1958. Kathleen and Patricia were heartbroken as was Bert although he didn't show it because he knew he had to be strong for his step-sisters. Patricia was in and out of psychiatric hospitals following the deaths of Thomas and Doris her life going into a downward spiral and coming to an unavoidable tragic end. To her credit Kathleen lived a full life despite her difficult childhood; she died peacefully in 2007. Bert, having given a life of service to the disadvantaged and downtrodden through his Christian ministry died very peacefully in the Christmas season of 2010. This was exactly one hundred years after his father Thomas jumped ship in 1910. And so one family's story was closed and all members could rest in peace – or could they? DETRACTION Out of the blue a paternal DNA test carried out by three women of one family that Bert helped through many difficulties as part of his Christian ministry nominated him as their biological father. The Trustees of Bert's estate who were also members of the same family as the three women smelt a rat. They knew the claims were flawed and set about to disprove their findings. What they discovered blew the top of the commonly held idea that the results of a paternal DNA test automatically incriminate the 'tested man'. This story exposes the flaw in that assumption.
