“One of the very first baseball games that I ever went to, which was at old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, ended when Brooks Robinson drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 9th. I've been a fan and a believer ever since!" says Austin Gisriel who applies his writing talents to the Grand Old Game. A graduate of Wesley Theological Seminary, Gisriel is fascinated by the moment-to-moment composition of Life, a concept inherent in every baseball game. “Each moment gives direction and meaning to the next,” says Gisriel. This is a theme of his latest effort, Time Is A Pool, a collection of 10 flash fiction stories. Gisriel is the author of Boots Poffenberger: Hurler, Hero, Hell-Raiser, as well as Safe at Home: A Season in the Valley among other baseball books and essays. Gisriel is married to the former Martha Pratt. They have two daughters, Rebecca and Sarah, either one of whom would have been named Brooks had she been a boy.
Everyone has a defining moment in his or her life; most of us have several. Sometimes, we recognize them when they occur; sometimes, we only recognize them in retrospect. Some are never known to us. Time Is A Pool is a collection of ten flash fiction stories in which the main character in each experiences a life-defining or life-affirming moment. These stories are brief, but the moments about which they speak are eternal. The characters are universal: a single mom, a minor league baseball player, a former minister, a couple of women, a couple of men. One experiences a moment of redemption, one a moment of love, another a moment of understanding.Time Is A Pool will make you laugh, make you think, maybe make you cry, and hopefully, give you hope about the possibilities that Life has to offer—possibly, in the next moment.
