It is 1946 as Olivia boards a ship with her family and begins a journey from England to Gibraltar.
Evacuated during World War II when she was an infant, Olivia looks forward to meeting her father for the first time. On her homeward journey, she makes friends with Eva a girl of similar age. Olivia and Eva go their separate ways, but Eva has left behind the scarf she was wearing. When Olivia arrives in Gibraltar, her father is not waiting for her and she wonders if she will see him again. In time, Olivia writes a letter to Eva informing her that she in possession of the scarf and waits desperately for her reply. As Olivia matures, she continues to search for love and friendship, but loss and death surround her.
Finding Eva will bring a sense of order and understanding to Olivia's world.
