Synopsis

John Flavin was born in Ireland in Ballylongford, County Kerry, in 1944. He was a member of the Kerry minor team that won the All-Ireland football final in 1962. The following year he emigrated to London and starting working in the construction industry as a tunnel miner and scaffolder, working for most of the major contractors. He became a trade union member in 1967 when he joined the construction trade union. In 1971, UCATT (Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians) was formed when four unions came together, including the construction trade union. He held every position in UCATT except that of general secretary, serving as president from 1993 to 1995. He is an honorary member of the union, which is now part of UNITE, and will have achieved fifty years’ membership in 2017. Even before he left Ballylongford—his Kerry hometown in Ireland—to travel to a new life in the UK in 1963, John Flavin was fighting for what he believed to be right. After joining the construction union in the late 1960s, he served at every position in UCATT (except that of general secretary) and has over many decades fought to improve workers’ pay and conditions and, more specifically, for greater regulation around health and safety in the workplace. He describes Margaret Thatcher’s government’s determination to dismantle the trade union movement while he and other union leaders attempted to secure better health and safety conditions in workplaces where the fatality rate remained tragically high. Following his term as union president, he set up Flavin Construction Training and Advisory Services in 1995. In 2001, he took up a position with Laing O’Rourke as group executive for industrial relations. He retired in 2014 and now lives in County Derry in Northern Ireland.
