REMEMBERING SILVER STAR
A new book which documents the history of Silver Star Motor Services of Porton Down.
The company was much missed by locals and there are still many people who remember the reliable and friendly service provided.
So popular was the company, and so iconic the silver and red vehicles, that there is still a great interest in this small but pioneering bus company. As a testament to that enthusiasm, three of the Silver Star vehicles have been restored and are often seen following their old routes through Salisbury and the Bourne Valley on commemorative and staff reunion tours.
It is strange therefore that in the almost 100 years since the inception of the company and the interest it still creates, that no one has written an account of the firm other than in a very few magazine articles and the odd chapters in books about other companies. In this new book, Terry Grace has rectified this omission.
The book which is in full colour, covers the history of the company, the fate of the vehicles after closure of the firm, the base at Porton Down, the restoration of some of the fleet, the Silver Star fleet and a section of pictures of the vehicles in the Bourne Valley. The book boasts close on 200 pictures, some of which have never before been published.
