Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents the significant geological insights gleaned from an expedition to southern Alaska, an area brimming with geological wonders. The author begins by setting the scene, describing the geographical context of southern Alaska and providing historical notes on the discovery of gold in the region. A detailed account of the valuable metals found in the area follows, including statistical data on gold production and estimates of the total value of the precious metals extracted. The author then embarks on an exploration of volcanic activity and changes in the levels of the land and sea. They describe the various types of volcanoes found in the area, from symmetrical cones to irregular masses, and delve into the science behind the formation of these geological features, including an explanation of the factors that contribute to the shape of each type of volcano. The book also discusses the author's firsthand observations of volcanic eruptions, including the eruption of St. Augustine in 1883, during which the mountain's summit was blown out and a secondary cone was exposed within the remaining portion of the crater rim. The author observed that the inner cone was still emitting steam more than a decade later, and the moat separating the outer crater wall from the inner cone was constantly bombarded by falling rocks detached by solfataric action. Through meticulous analysis, the author sheds light on the different types of rocks found in the area, including diorites, sodium-syenites, and andesites, and their petrographic and mineralogical characteristics, including plagioclase determinations using modern methods. The book concludes with remarks on the distribution of gold in southern Alaska and the gangue minerals associated with the gold deposits.
