Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book investigates translations of the medieval Latin hymn Dies Irae ("Day of Wrath") into English from the 17th century onwards. The author touches upon the hymn's literary history, including its likely authorship by Thomas of Celano, a friend of Saint Francis of Assisi. Many English versions imitated the original's triple-rhymed short stanzas, following the example of Joshua Sylvester in 1621. Prominent literary figures attempted their own versions, including Crashaw, whose approach was more of an "imitation" than a translation but nonetheless captured the hymn's "strength" (Schaff). Among the many later versions discussed is that of Lord Macaulay, whose translation became a standard. Yet these English versions illustrate a struggle between faithful translation and successful adaptation to English poetic forms. Despite the many translations examined, this book shows that none has yet captured all the power of the original.
