This book is an extensive catalogue of the many diverse manuscripts from various collections, predominately from the extensive personal collection of the author, which are currently held in the library at Stowe. The catalogue is divided into several sections according to manuscript origin. The first section of the catalogue lists the sizeable collection of Oriental manuscripts in the library. These have been variously sourced but include acquisitions from various European and British figures and institutions as well as a few pieces that appear to be relics of diplomatic exchanges. The catalogue includes many facsimiles, translations, and transcriptions of these original manuscripts, and in doing so provides a glimpse into the historical, literary, and cultural contexts of the original documents. Illustrating the important role that private collectors and institutions have played throughout history in the preservation and dissemination of knowledge, the depth and breadth of this collection offers a valuable insight into the rich tapestry of human history and expression.
