Sailors are advised to take into careful consideration the routes by which they intend to sail and the times of year in which they do so as the conditions can affect the length of the journey. There are tables in the book that summarize the percentage of calms, the direction of winds, and the location of icebergs by region and month. These allow the mariner to plan voyages to optimize their chances of fast travel and safety. The book reflects the state of the knowledge of sailing in the mid-19th century.
