The author traces the history of Scotland from the time of the four separate kingdoms through the consolidation of these kingdoms under Malcolm III, the Norman Conquest of England, and the reign of Alexander III. After Alexander's death and the death of his granddaughter, the Maid of Norway, the issue of succession fell to Edward I of England. He claimed that Scotland was subservient to England and while many Scottish nobles appealed to him to help determine who among them would rule, he made his arbitration dependent upon their recognition of him as their feudal superior. Thus began a protracted struggle between England and Scotland and for the Scots to establish their national identity.
