Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book commemorates the many elderly residents of the District of Columbia in 1880. Compiled from census data, the author alphabetically lists over 600 individuals who were aged 75 or older, with information on their sex, race, and age. The author analyzes the list to draw conclusions about the number of residents who died in the two years following the census, determining that 290 people included in the list passed away during that time period. To gain a clearer picture of the population, the author compares these findings to death certificates of the same era, revealing that the death certificates often listed ages that varied by ten or more years from the ages recorded in the census. The comparison of these two datasets provides insight into the ways that elderly residents in the District of Columbia were perceived at the time.
