Excerpt from The Science of Ceramic Machining and Surface Finishing II
Machining and surface finishing operations play a vital role in the production and reliable use of ceramics. It is essential, therefore, that the full scope of this technologically important subject be periodically rewed and evaluated. One of the most effective ways of accomplishing this is through meetings, such as this Second Symposium on Ceramic Machining and Surface Finishing. These meetings provide the necessary forum for the direct exchange and discussion of new data, recently developed techniques, and advances in our understanding of underlying principles.
This Symposium, in partiar, has focused on both the scientific and technological advances in ceramic machining and related topics. The interaction that has occurred at this meeting between science and technology will provide many direct benefits and, hopefully, will act as a stimulus for further progress. Through publication of these proceedings, the information presented at this symposium, together with any derived benefits, can be shared with the scientific and industrial community at large.
The National Bureau of Standards is pleased to be for this publication, and to have joined with the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Office of Naval Research, and the American Ceramic Society in sponsoring the symposium.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes the various mechanisms of material removal, technology of machining and surface finishing, characterization of machined surfaces, and the effects of machining on properties of ceramics. The importance of lateral fracture in abrasive material removal is examined, and the realm of its importance is defined. Thermal stresses induced by plastic penetration are also analyzed for their role in material removal. The volume of material removed by the passage of an abrasive particle is estimated, and the wear rates are discussed based on these estimates. The nature of cracks is examined in detail, and the relationship between surface cracks, median cracks, and radial cracks is investigated. The author presents new insights and analyses of these relationships, detailing the removal of material by lateral and multiple lateral cracks that extend normal to the motion of the abrading particle. The author concludes that understanding mechanisms is an essential prerequisite to optimizing ceramic machining and surface finishing, especially for complex processes like abrasive wear.
