Synopsis

Discover a rare medieval moral drama that turns Death into a marching guide for rulers and commoners alike. This edition brings an English translation of The Daunce of Machabree, framing a classic tale with modern notes and scholarly context. The work presents a vivid, reflective journey through power, mortality, and virtue, as Death speaks to emperors, popes, and common folk alike.

Read alongside a critical apparatus that situates the drama in its fifteenth-century context. The text interleaves translated verse with emblems of the period, including woodcut illustrations that heighten its dramatic mood. The edition traces how the tale, inspired by older legends, uses a mirroring dance to show how every life ends in the same moment, regardless of rank or riches.

• Experience a dramatic moral poem where Death addresses a spectrum of characters from pope to child.

• Explore how power, wealth, and fame are weighed against humility and repentance.

• See translation work and editorial notes that illuminate historical language and imagery.

• Appreciate period woodcuts and the artistic context surrounding the text.

Ideal for readers of medieval drama, literary history, and those curious about how early scholars recast mortality for a broad audience.
